The name-use doesn't bother me so much. After all, as far as I know, the name "Maleficent" is the antagonist's name ONLY in Disney canon. So they might as well keep the other names the same. Your second point resonates with me though. The last bit about smiles and life-long attachments to dresses made actually laugh out loud. It's so true! The Disney princess line is (IMO) very tacky.
This is why I'm glad Aladdin got most of its canon consecutively years ago because we don't have to deal with retcon too much. Disney is clearly trying to build a more consistent canon to compete with all the newer fandoms that are born with these recent films, but it's entirely too large to mobilize 100+ years of material when each movie has its own fandom and set of information. I get the feeling the Maleficent movie is going to be a supplementary canon to Sleeping Beauty if you want it to be.
The Disney Princess line is so gross. The older I get that's the more I realize how terrible it is, especially to any of the princesses of color.

Post subject: I wish Maleficent movie used a different name for Aurora
I was excited for the film at first, but I really wish they chose a different name for the princess. Just so we can go on believing that the upcoming movie is just an alternate version of the story, and not necessarily canon. I really don't want the two worlds mixing because it changes the "reality" of the fandom/whathaveyou. Plus, Elle Fanning doesn't look or sound anything like Mary Costa.
I mean, even all the princesses posing in one big poster together makes me uncomfortable. Partly because the marketers give them all the same face shapes, but also because it gives them all different personalities than they had in their individual movies (vapid smiles, and life long attachments to dresses they only wore for 2 minutes)
