Yeah, there's a ring given to him by the sorcerer when he goes into the cave. There's some versions that say it's for protection and others just because (which makes no sense to me unless the sorcerer had no idea it was a genie, but I have to re-read the story I have again).
He goes to the treasure room to get the lamp, but then has a change of heart before bringing it to the sorcerer going ".....wait, why do you want this piece of crap when there's all this other treasure in here? What's so special about this?" Laughing There's some versions that also say Aladdin said he wanted more of a cut of however much money the sorcerer was going to get for this and the sorcerer refused.
Then the sorcerer gets angry and shuts the cave with Aladdin still inside. Then the genie of the ring frees him and brings him out the cave. Now there's all kinds of variations of that like how he ended up rubbing the ring whether by accident or by crying and rubbing his face. There's also variations of how long he was in the cave. Some say two days,. other says a few hours. It depends on what you read. There's about 2348905094 versions and translations out there.

There was a ring and a lamp. That's how I remember it, anyway.

It's been bugging me.

It's okay. I wonder why Genie still has those shackles if he's free? A fashion fad?

How many versions did the orginal Aladdin have?

I know that the very first version was from China and it was adapted into 1001 Arabian nights. That was the one with ring thing and spies on the princess while she was taking a bath.

that one you guys are talking about was the ring that protects him when he was in a cave of wonders?

And then there was a version with two rings and genies. One was demonic and the other was good.

Where did a ring evolve into a lamp ?

I'm just saying... I've read a few versions of Aladdin, and while a few of them mentioned that the ring was intended to protect Aladdin, it had never said anything about protecting him from the cave's death traps per se.

Maybe you found a version or two I haven't.

That's why I said SOME versions Laughing. I know the genie of the ring was in there; that's how he got out.

As I recall, the ring contained the genie - it really had nothing to do with protecting him from the cave's death-traps.

The uncle told him to pick up his robes because if he touched so much as the walls, he'd die instantly.

I know in some versions of the original story, he is given a ring to protect himself because he really can't touch a THING in there until he got to the treasure room, where he gets the lamp and the really rare jewels. He couldn't even touch the walls Laughing

I've always thought the order don't touch anything is only about the treasures. I mean, he touches everything there except the gold and jewels: the carpet, the sand, the stones, the AIR... Rolling Eyes You got my point.

Yeah, I guess carpet didn't count because he was alive.

I think what the cave meant by "omgz no touchie" was the treasure. If someone told you to go in a cave that is filled with a lamp, a carpet or endless treasure, which one are you going to go for? Laughing. I don't really think of Carpet as part of the CoW; he's a freelance character that just so happened to be there Laughing

I've just been wondering recently: in the cave of wonders Aladdin can't touch anything except the lamp but he touches carpet...does carpet not count?
It's been bugging me.
