From an interview with Thomas Schumacher, head of Disney Theatricals:
Quote: |
Ahead for Disney Theatricals, after "Little Mermaid," are three projects, none of them what you might expect. One is a prequel to "Peter Pan." Another is based on Jules Feiffer's "The Man in the Ceiling." And the third is "a large project based on a historical figure" -- that's all he'd say.
What about, oh, "Aladdin"?
"I don't yet have a way that 'Aladdin' complements what Broadway does best," he says. "There has to be a reason for it to go on to the next step." |
Considering that Howard Ashman's original script for Aladdin was rejected for being too theatrical, I find this incredibly ironic.
Good job not mentioning those elephants in the room, Tom... _________________ "If only I could believe you. Perhaps I can! After all... you do bear the name of a flower." -- Arbutus

For a moment I thought the title refered to Micheal Schumacher the F1 driver.

I tell you we Al fans are always the last in line! We're the black sheep at Disney Theaterical and Disney Consumer. No Broadway show, no season sets just some of medicore princess stuff if any.

...does he mean he doesn't know how Aladdin can put on a Broadway type show? Are you kidding me? I'd say between looking at just Friend Like Me and even Prince Ali, I'm not really understanding where that's coming from because those are big numbers. Now I can understand from a technical standpoint of view trying to pull those off and even the movie itself because there's a lot of elements you can't glaze over *coughGENIEcough*, but doesn't "complements what Broadway does best" I'm not really believing .
There's so much they can add, too. Jasmine's song "To Be Free", maybe give Jafar another song, perhaps Sultan about his troubles with his daughter?
And they can add more scenes like...shoot Aladdin and Jasmine talking while going to his hovel. He lives on the other side of the city. I doubt it was silent the entire walk there . Or maybe show what Jafar told the guards about capturing Prince Ali? Because Lord knows I've love to hear that. The flight to the oasis, the flight back home after hanging out in China....there's potential here! Stop trying to lie to me |

They could even try to expand upon Aladdin's motivations and work in the "Proud of Your Boy" number, though I'm not sure how they'd do it. But, if they tried, there just might be a way!
The whole discussion in the hovel could be turned into a song, too.
This has nothing at all to do with the fact that they're Arab Muslims and that could be sketchy in New York. Nope. That's crazy talk... _________________ "This cow's been covered with flour!" |

My opinion of Schumacher seems to bounce between thinking he's great and thinking he's an idiot!
Bringing Mermaid to the stage was a fantastic choice and long overdue, but then saying Aladdin wouldn't work is just plain stupid!
It would be hard to do, especially with the Genie, but then look at everything they've done so far - the Beast's transformation, the sets of Lion King, the transition between ocean and land in Mermaid, etc. If they wanted to they could make it work.
The songs in the film were fantastic, and there are plenty more moments within the film that could support new songs. Just look at how much they added to Mermaid! The cast recording is 27 tracks and it's missing the entr'acte (mostly likely to keep it to 1 CD).
Personally I wouldn't give To Be Free to Jasmine, I'd give it back to Genie (like Menken originally wanted it to be, plus it would be a great way to end Act 1 with Al becoming a Prince). Give Jasmine new song, like a duet with Sultan in the garden, or something where she runs away and see's the market for the first time.
Or how about a duet between Aladdin and Jasmine as they both look at the Palace and feel trapped. I'd love to see a song with Jafar and Sultan (just before Prince Ali) as he tries to convince him he can solve the "problem" with Jasmine (interupted mid-song by Prince Ali starting)
Proud of Your Boy could be added back in with a little work. Maybe when Al realises how badly he's messed up and is on his way to tell Jasmine the truth? They'd just have to work into the story how he's always wanted to make his mother proud, and possibley give Genie a sarcastic line about how his mother would be proud of him before his "excuse me, master".
They could even revisit the idea of having a song leading to/during the final battle (as was attempted with High Adventure). It could end up a fantastic quartet between Al, Jasmine, Genie and Jafar!
There is so much they could do with this on Broadway! |

You can say that but for a limited time. So everybody go see it before...They tear down the Hyperion Theater for the DCA into Pixar Park. Hyperion Theater is on their list to remove from the park.
I've heard that they are going to tear down the theatre and build another one to resemble a theatre in Walt's HomeTown. |
