A few days ago I watched Disney's Tinkerbell movie. I was expecting the usual DTV crap with obnoxious characters and horrible acting. The visuals made me think it was going to be something along the lines of Bratz or Barbie.

I was pleasantly surprised.

Sure, the plot was nothing special, but the characters were likable enough that I could let that slide. There were no obnoxious sidekicks and the cute fuzzy critters were cute without inducing diabetes. The humor was, for the most part, humorous. It had a few groaner moments, but was overall very enjoyable.

I also applaud Disney for conveying the message that the word needs inventive people, and that the ability to build and invent isn't dependent on having a Y chromosome. The subtle feminist message is wonderful, and is refreshingly free of the superficial trappings that have been tacked onto feminism over the years.

If I had a little girl, this would be a film I'd buy for her.

I hear this is pretty good, but my distain of Tinker Bell puts a huge block up from me wanting to see it Laughing

I rented this DVD and it corrupted in the middle of the film and wouldn't play anymore. I was so meh to it that I've never bothered to see the rest of it. Laughing

I dunno, it just didn't do anything for me at all. Confused

You can see all of it on youtube, you guys. AG, don't worry, Tinker Bell is not a brat in this one! She's just born and hasn't met Peter yet, so she's pretty innocent. I don't want to spoil anything but the ending is kind of humorous! Very Happy

You know, I usually hate it when an adaptation gives someone a personality makeover, but this was one of the few cases where it actually worked for me.

Realistically, the original Tinkerbell's personality wouldn't have made a very good heroine. Now, Disney could have gone a lot of horrible ways in changing Tink's personality. I think I was half-expecting a character who was either all sugar and sunshine or all sass and spice - or at least one of the annoying canned personalities Disney slaps onto their DTV characters. To my astonishment, they actually managed to make Tink a decent, likeable character, and they managed to make the majority of secondary characters decent as well. (Bobble and Clank FTW!) It was like... it was like someone at Disney (maybe John Lasseter?) actually cared. Razz

It was also refreshingly free of the scenery-gnawing you find in most CGI movies these days. For some reason, most non-Pixar CGI movies have idiotically exaggerated animation and acting. o_0

Sure, it wasn't a masterpiece, but I found it very enjoyable overall.

I'm honestly a little anxious as to how the second installment will hold up - will it also be a decent movie, or will it be on the same level as most of the other DTVs?
