I just saw this come across Sci Fi Wire:

Disney Relights Aladdin's Lamp
Walt Disney Pictures has bought a pitch for a modern-day Aladdin story from writer Bill Kelly for Adam Shankman's Offspring Entertainment, Variety reported. Shankman (The Pacifier) is tentatively slated to direct, pending completion of the script, the trade paper reported.
He will produce along with Offspring's Jennifer Gibgot. Sunil Perkash, who developed the story with Kelly, also is producing and will share story credit. Kelly is on tap to write the script.
The movie will be a live action retelling of the story in a contemporary setting. Otherwise, the studio is keeping details under wraps.
Kelly is already writing another contemporary, fairy-tale-inspired movie for Disney: Enchanted, a mix of live-action and animation, to be helmed by Kevin Lima (Tarzan). |

*Cracks up laughing* Deary, one of my personal rules is to Always Have a Backup Plan!
*Puts on a gas mask and pulls out a Marijuana Smoke Bomb* Don't make me light this.
But to tell ya the truth, I really don't have too high of hopes for this 'un. I detect... nitroglycerin in the gears.
The way I see it, it'll either be really good, or it'll really bomb. And I'd place my bets on the latter. _________________

I thought the whole point of the first Aladdin movie was to do stuff you couldn't do in live action.
Though "Enchanted" might be interesting. *fan of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"* _________________

I don't know about y'all, but I'm excited! My jaw literally dropped when I read this. I was discussing something like this with another friend about how hard it would be to bring Aladdin to broadway because of Genie, the cave of wonders, etc, but now that it's gonna be a Live Action, that changes a few things. Not too many because it's contemporary, but yay! It's not exactly impossible (although Genie's shapeshifting might have to be CGI or something if they do that), but it won't be easy. I think in the end the hard work might pay off. This I HAVE to see. Not like I wasn't going to, but I have to make the official statement
And whoever plays Aladdin needs to be approved by his fans for the hotness level. Ok?ILuvU.BuhBye! |

Wow! I am so excited! Gee, I wonder. Is this going to be of a "modern day setting?" that has something to do with Aladdin's lamp or something that is live action based on the original movie ?

They better do a good job on casting Aladdin and Jasmine too!
I wasn't very impressed with the Aladdins at the Musical Spectacular. |

Back in December, he was the main Aladdin for certain shows. Kirsten can tell you more than I can because she has actually seen him |

Given that they're just getting into writing the script, it could be years from now... if it ever happens at all. _________________

I'd assume it would mean contemporary to whenever the film was released.
(Though personally, I think Aladdin could be reeeeeeeeaaaaaally interesting set on a DS9-type space station...) _________________
