I just have a quick question about Jasmine's age in the movie. Everybody always refers to her as being 16, but I don't remember them ever mentioning her name. All I remember is that they say her birthday is in three days; but the age she's turning is never mentioned. So I was just wondering where everybody gets the she's 16 thing from?

If you go through all of the DISNEY movies, the princesses are either already 16, or turning 16. It's like a tradition or something. That, and in that time period, girls usually were married at 13... but that's too young for Disney, so they upped it a little bit.

Why, how old do you think that she was?

I don't know, I just always thought she was suppose to be like late-teens or something but without an actual age. I guess if I had to have made a random guess in the first movie I would've said 18 when I watched it, but that might be my Western/U.S. bias (since 18=legal)

Yes, nowadays we do have to wait to be 18 to get married under normal circumstances.
Cool
But Aladdin is in a completely different time period, unless you weren't aware.

I can see where you'd get she was 18, but there are books about the movie that say she was 15 turning 16 Very Happy

Yeah, she doesn't exactly look 16, she looks more like a 18 yr. old. But if Jasmine was 16, I'm going to say that Aladdin was 17. Because 17 is older, but yet it still holds that boyish age quality to it.

They've had young-looking sixteen year olds previously, (Ariel,) maybe they're attempting to compensate.

I don't know. Auora from "Sleeping Beauty" didn't look like any sixteen year-old I've ever seen. More like a nineteen-twenty year old.

Yeah...long-faced... Confused

For some reason, she's only attractive in the movie. Ever try to draw her? Ugh.

Jasmine was fifteen for most of the movie, but turned sixteen.

In the scene where Jasmine was introduced, the sultan says, "You must be married to a prince by your sixteenth birthday... You only have three more days!"

He was seventeen in the series. (See "The Lost Ones"... I think that's the one.)

It's "The Prophet Motive" and he said he lived on the streets for 17 years, so you can decipher that how you want. Very Happy

I personally think he meant from birth until the end of the first movie and he was looking back on it like a year or so later. Also, I just keep him and Scott around the same age because...it just makes sense Laughing

I always thought that, too, but then I got the DVDs and checked, and the Sultan really just says "You must be married to a prince by your next birthday..."
