I'm glad that the Japanese really pay attention to story and character, as well as sellability and special effects in their animation. I mean, over here, it's gotten to the point where cartoons, (save the nice folks at Disney, who are also slowly selling out,) are really an enjoyable, but incredibly lowbrow and repetitive medium. Even Nick, after the success of *ugh* SpongeBob kind of gave up on providing us with entertaining cartoons that were more than squishy looking random characters that were either totally devoid of soul (Catscratch,) or incredibly preachy, (Danny Phantom,) so cartoons have kind of gone to the dogs over here, and I'm glad that the East is still tossing us cartoon-lovers a bone or three. Now if oooonly they could do something about the slightly too MATURE content in some of those shows. I would watch FMA a lot more if it wasn't so gratuitously violent, and there are some "suggestive" parts of Pokemon and Digimon I can't even watch with my little sister in the room. Rolling Eyes

True, all the best cartoons are Japanese. Perhaps the only one that's not Japanese that's good is X Men Evo. The rest is Pokemon, Sailor Moon, etc.

Well, X-men is one of those rare American cartoons, CONCEPTUALLY, that dares to be different and push the envelope, but I don't know about individual plots, I think they've kinda run short on those....

There's also the increasingly popular "Teen Titans." I'm not really a fan, but I do like the way they did some of it. It has fairly dimensional characters, the plots ALMOST aren't overused, and, I'm actually not sure I like this, but it's meant to be imitation anime. It's obviously imitation, but at least it tries...or sells out, depending on your opinion. So I'd give the mediocre thumbs up for that show for at least throwing some of us a bone, even if it's not all that great to begin with.

Yes. The ONE thing I don't like about it is...it's preachy. Plain and simple. There's an obvious moral they're trying to shove into every show. Other than that, well, it's not at all bad compared to the other stuff out there.

That's not exactly a cartoon first... go back and watch old She-Ra or He-Man episodes... they flat out told you the moral in the end! Laughing

Oh, yeah, I'm not saying its horrible, or I wouldn't think anything of the show at all, but still...even in Teen Titans, you can find one line or couple of lines where they do FLAT OUT tell you the moral...that...RUINS the cartoon experience, when are people going to learn that?

Yeah... the trouble with putting a moral into a story is that you can't be too preachy about it and make it too obvious. Otherwise, you're just going to disgust a lot of people.

Wow...well, ALMOST every episode, (except the good ones) has at least one example where they say the moral of the story in a monologue, or a metaphorical "line of justice," so to speak, but seeing as I don't have any transcripts, I can't really point out any...

I remember the one "Only Human" being very cheesy...um, I know in the "Tournament of Heroes", Robin says something along the lines of "I'm not concerned about winning! Winning isn't everything! Now I'm only fighting you!" And even then, to lead up to that, he says at LEAST two or three times: "Winning isn't everything: just the only thing that matters."

It just gets old. But I still watch new episodes. The Terra episodes have to be the best so far.

I didn't really like the Terra-arc episodes, mainly because they play them too much and I didn't like the character that much.

Well, yeah, personally I didn't like Terra either, but I liked the episodes because they were done very artistically, some of the few that actually followed the classic rule "Show, don't tell" why Terra goes bad, and it also gave a lot of insight to all the characters reflected by how they treated a traitor...and she was Beast Boy's girl, and I like him! Laughing
