Everytime someone gets in trouble, they get thrown in the dungeon with no trial or anything. The guards and Jafar do whatever they want, without consulting the Sultan first, even though he did say to consult him first. What I find really funny is even the animals get thrown in the dungeon (more than few times!) Like in ROJ "Guards! Guards! The treacherous parrot!" Hello! he's a parrot!
Even the Sultan and Jasmine have been in the dungeon a a few times. I guess Disney is just trying to teach kids a lesson--if your bad you go to the naughty corner. Even Abu gets punished for stealing, even though he's aladdin's pal. Kids don't really understand the legal system, and I didn't think anything anything of it when I watched Aladdin when I was younger.

Aladdin had a lawyer in KOT. He forbade Rasoul to have any lines and to take his case to a higher court.
And I guess the rest of them, well it's a monarchy, and as far as the Sultan, well, I guess they figure, what the Sultan doesn't know won't hurt him. _________________ "I too am a member of your species, Captain, or I was. Well, "other girls work for law degrees," right? Or...maybe the song got scrapped, not because of needed character changes...but because of the anachronisms! |

I know they would have had courts and judges, and the Sultan would probably be the highest court of appeal, but I don't know about lawyers. _________________ "If only I could believe you. Perhaps I can! After all... you do bear the name of a flower." -- Arbutus |

I'm quite sure they didn't have lawyers as we know them today. Also, back in those times, you were guilty until proven innocent, not the other way around. _________________

I don't think that they did have lawyers back then. Wasn't the whole lawyer thing lies within the U.S. government ? For Aladdin's case, I think the Sultan makes the decision who gets sentenced. He probably have both stories to the crime. The guilty and the accuser. And the Sultans would have decided who's guilty or not.
But, the citizens take the law into their own hands. The "eye for an eye" thing. Remember? When the vendor was about to chop Jasmine's hand off in the first movie. Because she gave the apple to that little boy. Was that right for the vendor to do that, to take matters into his own hands? If that's true then What does the Sultan do if the citizens are justifying the law? |

I know there were lawyers in England; not sure how far back that goes, though...
Not sure if the sultan would be involved in all cases, but he definitely is supposed to be in the case of a capital offense ("From now on you are to discuss sentencing of prisoners with me before they are beheaded!").
I really don't think Farouk was following the law when he was going to chop off Jasmine's hand; if you look at other things he does I think he's just a vigilante. In "Web of Fear" he organizes a mob to go kill the Unkbuut when the sultan forbid anyone to go near them. In fact, I'm not sure if Agrabah really does punish thieves by cutting off one hand; there've been an awful lot of thieves on the show and not one is one-handed... _________________ "If only I could believe you. Farouk screamed at Jasmine and said, " Do you know what's the penalty is for stealing?" Maybe it's something that Disney didn't show one handed characters because little kid would be asking. " Mommy? Why is that guy has one handed?" Probably it would save the one on one talk about disability. Heh..heh " Tales of the Darkside Agrabah".
But I have a question for anybody to answer..
How do you think Agrabah run on laws and government ? What are Sultan's involvement with his people ? And What does the guards, Rasoul and the gang. Actually do ? Otherwise to guard the royal family? Are they like cops or officers? |

I think that still is the penalty for stealing. That they cut off your hand so you can't steal anymore. Your right hand, because the other one, you use for dirty work, or something. LIke if you lie, they cut off your tongue, so you won't lie anymore.
The Sultan is probably just...well, I guess having almost no involvement with the people, you know, like any other monarch back then. And I guess the guards are kind of like the guards. Like the Sultan's police. _________________ "I too am a member of your species, Captain, or I was. Perhaps I am not anymore. Perhaps you are right in thinking of me as an alien. In the first film, you can see that there were city guards (as lead by Rasoul) AND palace guards. The palace guards - the ones who tried to arrest Jafar - were dressed quite differently. It seems, though, that the people who were responsible for the cartoon series quite forgot the palace guards existed, and so elevated Rasoul to a downright spooky level of near omni-presence.
And yes, cutting off someone's hand was the penalty for stealing, as well as a few other things. (Sorry, I don't really remember any specifics right now.) _________________

I remember those guards, but...I know this will seem dumb, I don't know, maybe I need to take a closer look, but they looked like the ones who showed up during the Prince Ali song. _________________ "I too am a member of your species, Captain, or I was. Rasoul sleeping: ::muttering incoherently:: Seize him! ::muttering incoherently:: Darn you Aladdin Ali Abooboo...go to the dungeon....and put on this catsuit...
I also keep asking myself what Sultan would have done if Jasmine came back with one hand.
"Ah, Jasmine. Why don't we put this whole nasty business behind us, hmm? Besides, you don't need both hands that's what you have servants for!" |
