Ok, no one take the following the wrong way or that I think some of the subject matters are funny. I'm not trying to bring politics into the fandom anymore than people already have, but I'm just curious...
Am I the only person who laughs or finds it funny whenever I see or hear a news title with Aladdin character names like "Akbar arrested for crime", "Aladdin announces presidental nomination in Egpyt", "Mahmoud under allegations in former hostage situation" or "Abu calls on military top brass to stay neutral"? |

Yes, I have seen ALL of those. I didn't make up a single one The Mahmoud one I heard today which is what made me start this topic. |

Before I had the internet at home I used to get all my character and place names from the news and from dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc. It only backfired on me once: in a story I haven't published I had a town on the border of the Land of the Black Sand that I called Baath because I heard it meant "resurection" and it seemed appropriate because of, yanno, mamluks. And then the second Iraq war broke out and everyone knew that word in a different context. |

I wouldn't say it made me giggle or anything, but it's definitely made me look twice!
Recently, though, I've read a lot of name sites (I play The Sims 2, so I need lotsa names), so it has less of an impact on me.
...Though if I saw an Aladdin character named Siddig, Fadil, or Bashir, I'd probably have a chuckle! |

I don't watch the News. I have enough crap to make me depressed. (I'm not depressed, but you know what I mean.) _________________

I've got the Star Trek gene. My dad still reads the novels. Although he left the actual fandom because of all the slash. |

No, it was only original Trek at the time, so Kirk/Spock. |
