Question: Why doesn't the Genie just zap Aladdins dad out of the dungeon like he did with the Sultain(sp?), Princess, Monkey & Iago in the Return of Jafar? Sure it would of made for a boring movie but he states that "There are some wishes even I can't make come true" when indeed this IS within his capabilities. |

Well, first of all, it's against the palace rules. In the series, even he obeys the Sultan *Except for in Dagger Rock*. He only doesn't listen when he doesn't think it's right.
Plus, they needed a reason for Aladdin to show devotion in the movie, and this was it. It just makes for a better movie. Plus if Genie had saved Cassim... we wouldn't get to see Aladdin in that hott rogue outfit.
There are many times through out KOT and ROJ and the series when Genie coulda easily used his magic to get out of tightspots... but that would make it boring, wouldn't it? _________________ MysticMeg's Stories on THE LIBRARY OF AGRABAH!!!

Also, if Genie did indeed continue to have weakening powers from the time of the end of Aladdin throughout the rest of this saga, perhaps this was no longer within his capabilities. Perhaps it was, but as Hourglass pointed out, there was a legitimate reason that Cassim was locked up in the first place that Genie wanted to respect. It's significant also that Aladdin himself chose to break Cassim out...to show him one last act of mercy before hopefully getting Cassim out of his life forever.
Genie's inability to make this wish come true isn't necessarily a magical issue at all anyway. Genie's pretty much always been incapable of messing with people's minds, it seems, at least in terms of making them fall in love...and I think this would be the same sort of issue. He can't make Cassim care more about his son than his life of crime. Falling in love is not an issue, of course, but no one, magical or not, had the power to make Cassim LOVE Aladdin the way that Aladdin wanted. Only Cassim could make that decision, and not only did he fail to at this point, but he also clearly broke the law and was JUSTLY imprisoned. (You'd think life imprisonment for breaking into the treasury would have been spelled out pretty clearly at some point in the series, but length of sentence aside, he broke the law and deserved his time in the dungeon, which Al and Genie both new and Al decided to go against of his own free will later on.) |

Genie didn't want to free Cassim; he got into a big argument with Aladdin about it, so he's definitely not going to do it himself. I'm sure he could have freed him if he wanted to, though. He doesn't have to do what Aladdin wants anymore now that he's free.
Also, if Genie just zapped him out of there it would be obvious it was done with magic and Aladdin would be implicated. Aladdin wanted it to look like Cassim escaped on his own. |

That's hott! I love it when Aladdin rebels. What I think is that Aladdin is the type of guy is when he starts something ( Cassim is the initial incident that changes the story and appears into Aladdin's life.) then Aladdin has to finish it. ( by freeing his father and getting out of his life.)
And every other reason that was posted up here. |

Well, I am unsure what to say about Genies morals. On one hand he stripped sultan of his authority and moved his palace. Obviously sultan did nothing wrong deserving of that (That we know of). We see Genie is capable of doing bad things. |

That was while he was a slave of the lamp and was obeying Jafar's wish, though. He definitely wouldn't do that of his own free will.
On that subject, Genie seems a lot more strict about the genie rules than Jafar or even Eden. I mean, compare how those two treated Abis Mal to how Genie treated Jafar... |

Nothing big like that. Just little things, like hurting Iago, lying, etc. And he uses his magic for selfish reasons, which is technically against the Code of the Genie (even if it doesn't seem to be enforced much...). |

"Power to the Parrot". (breaks out the video file)
Quote: |
Genie: Ahem! Remember the Code [of the Genie]! The Code clearly states, no big treasures.
Iago: Then what is the point?!
Genie: The point of a genie's life is service to others. And the union is very vigilent.
Iago: Oh, yeah, like you never materialize yourself a 12-pound hot fudge sundae.
Genie: Shh! Do you want everyone to know? |

It was a harmless sundae! I'm gonna have to sit here and write all the Genie Code rules...

Maybe because he's been a genie longer? Or he's been in trouble before?
But I wonder if that has anything to do with general genie/human relationships in the sense that most genies were mischievious and tricked their masters despite being bound to the lamp and the rules of the genie. As long as they got their wishes was the only main thing they couldn't disobey.
I think if they had Genie trick Jafar, there'd be no point for Aladdin to trick him at the end and show everyone that he was in fact listening to Genie when he was talking about what it's like to be a genie, and that simply being his clever street rat self was going to get him out of that situation.
That, and I really just don't think at that point he would have came up with that idea |
