I learned a very disconcerting thing while rewatching some episodes last night.

...The people who do closed captions can be absolute morons.

I have the episode The Lost City of the Sun recorded from back when Aladdin was still doing its main run on Disney Afternoon. I discovered many unsettling mispellings through the person who did closed captioning (and these aren't all just singular mistakes, done once and never again; it's this way through the whole episode):

1. Mozenrath was spelled Mozenwrath. *shudder*

2. Shumash was spelled as "Shamash" -- and I'm not just instilling my own version of the spelling on this one. Shumash is pictured on the Code of Hammurabi, and is a Sun god. I suppose in Aladdin they couldn't say he was a god.

3. Xerxes was spelled Xerxiez. *saddness*

4. Mamluk was spelled Mamluck. (and you know, I've seen lots of disputes on how this word is spelled; while in Aladdin it's normally spelled Mamluk, I've also seen it spelled Mameluke in a number of books. So bah on this error; they can spell it however they like ><)

Needless to say, I'm never relying on closed captioning to give me the proper spelling of anything again. It's usually spelled how the person who's typing it up thinks it's supposed to be spelled.

Closed captioning has never been very accurate about anything, let alone character names. I've seen many times when they're royally biffed up dialogue.

I'd imagine changing the dialogue is sometimes trying to interpret it for the deaf to be able to understand it better. There's a lot of figures of speech and what not that they really don't understand - sarcasm is a good example.

No, I mean like they'll put a different word in that sounds similar, so that the meaning of the sentence is totally changed. Almost like the person doing the closed captioning heard it wrong. Laughing Laughing

Yes, I've noticed that several times.

Er, Shamash actually is the right spelling. Embarassed

My favorite closed captioning goof is still when they transcribed Genie's line from "Shadow of a Doubt" "evil edifice" as "evil Oedipus". Laughing

Yeah, I saw that one closed captioned, too. Mozenwrath? MOZENWRATH? I always thought Shamash was RIGHT, though, where did you see it spelled the other way?

I tell you, the butchering they do to Pokemon is scary... Laughing

And Mozenwrath is just one letter off from Mozenwraith. Coincidence? I think NOT! Twisted Evil Maybe... if Sheppard is Aladdin reincarnated, Steve was Mozenrath reincarnated!

Wonder what he'll come back as next?

Well, I was told all about SGA when I told AG about my Destane idea. It was real similar to the Wraith. Laughing

Yesss... this is making more and more sense as time goes on. Mozenrath uses the gauntlet to drain the life-force from people, making them into Mamluks... so of course he'd be reincarnated as a Wraith!
