Because back in 1939, it wasn't nearly as controversial. |
1937
I definitely agree about the things that are acceptable while religion is banned. Makes no sense. |

Was it 1937? I was so sure it was '39.
I have a terrible head for numbers. _________________

I always thought it was 1938.
I have the VHS, and for some reason, it looks like it's from the 1930s. I got it in 1994. The quality of the tape is just bad, which is surprising because I hardly ever watch it.

It premiered in December 1937; I'm sorry to say I don't know the exact date, but I'm pretty sure it was twenty-something. i believe 'twas at the Carthay Circle Theatre in California where Steamboat Willie had premiered on November 18, 1928. /wannabe Disney Historian |

Ok, I do remember something about December in history class. (My instructor talks about pop culture as well as politics. Hey, it's all important, ya know.)

It's not that it's *bad* it's just that for a lot of people it's so *important* that if you get it wrong you can offend a lot of people. (see: Aladdin. So then in the sequels and series there was not a reference to Islam to be found and they had a Western-style wedding. )
I wouldn't say *banned* though. There's Hunchback of Notre Dame, of course. And I believe Lilo prayed before bedtime in Lilo and Stitch but I might be remembering that wrong. _________________ "If only I could believe you. Perhaps I can! After all... you do bear the name of a flower." -- Arbutus |

You know, I didn't even realize they took out saying Allah or doing anything all that religious past the first movie. Well, except Iago reciting the Lord's Prayer when he thought he was about to be boiled in "The Game" |

Well, he does say "jeez"!
And of course it is probably set before the new world was discovered, so there was not a Catholic to be found in South America. _________________ "If only I could believe you. Perhaps I can! After all... you do bear the name of a flower." -- Arbutus |

I think you're right about that; I generally see both sides of this issue. There are statements from all sides that I agree with; I tend to see everything in shades of grey, and am thus not always very decisive. What I meant was that many people (I'm not just talking about movies) are so afraid to say anything about religion at all because it is important to so many and a sensitive subject, but then you have others who are offended by the lack of discussion or portrayal of the matter, so you can't please anyone. And I really do fail to see how people could be more hung up over a character in a movie saying a prayer than brutally slashing another character to ribbons.

I know that was really poor word choice on my part there; I was being a bit hasty. Lilo did indeed pray for an angel. I certainly don't think religion is banned within Disney (Epcot does a reading of the Christmas Story in their annual 'Candlelight Processional' every Christmas season)...
'Banned' was a strong word, bad me. And I wasn't solely refering to Disney, just the fact that we live in a confusing, PC, hard-to-please world; the avoidance of the subject of religion in a non-religious setting has good and bad points to it. I can see why there's controversy and caution surrounding the matter; sometimes it seems the world has no tact and consideration for anyone at all, and other times we try to be so PC it makes me sick.
C'est la vie. |

So, Iago follows some tribal religion then? _________________ You know you want to Legendary Genie Embrace me... |

Seeing as the movies and TV episodes were made in the 1990s, Iago can be whatever religeon you want him to be. Maybe the writer wasn't thinking religeon, but everybody knows the Lord's Prayer. So, whatever. I think he's a Methodist.

I'm Catholic and I know the Lord's Prayer. For shame, Chalupa! For shame!
Yep, Iago is part of a tribal religion where he is God and everyone bows to the parrot and serves him grapes. |
