In Sleeping Beauty, King Stephan and King Hubert sing a song about skumps. What are skumps?

I don't think it's a thing per se. It strikes me as being a word used when toasting, rather along the lines of skoal.

Okay, thanks. Smile

Also, does anyone know Maleficant's background? Does she have an official one or just stuff from those princess books?

You're welcome. But remember, it's only speculation on my part. I really have no actual evidence as to what 'skumps' means. Wink

As for Maleficent's backstory... I don't think she has one, really. She's just a fairy who went bad, far as I know.

Near as I can tell, Maleficent doesn't have a real backstory. Then again, neither did the fairy who cursed the princess in the original stories (as far as I've read). She was mainly the eldest fairy with the most power who was insulted by not being invited and receiving the honors due to her.

Actually, if you read a number of French fairytales/salon tales (a number of them were actually invented as the latter), you find fairies see themselves as insulted alot, and because they have more power than kings, they can do something to "rectify" it. Rolling Eyes

As powerful as they are, you'd think they wouldn't be so petty about these things. I mean, why should they be any more ruffled over getting insulted by a human than you'd be getting insulted by a five-year-old?

Maybe they're some kind of vicarious wish-fulfillment for the audience...

Maleficent hails from the Q Continuum, obviously. She takes all her lessons (*cough*wardrobe*cough*) from the de Lancie Q. Believe me, all-powerful beings can be extraordinarily petty. Wink

I dunno... this audience didn't want anything bad to happen to Aurora. I think it's more along the lines of a Convenient Plot Device.

In the original stories, the bad fairy was just insulted for not being invited. She curses the baby and leaves. But in the movie, when she asks why she wasn't invited the answer is "You weren't wanted!"

That made me wonder why she wasn't wanted. The narrator also says that Maleficent's territory is "forbidden domain." I thought she was like Jafar, who had a falling out with the king or something.

She wasn't wanted because she has green skin, wears dark clothes, and has a pointed hat, so duh, she's evil!

Look at her, she's wicked! Get her! No one mourns the wicked, so we've got to bring her down!!!!

Actually, Maleficent's real problem is simply that she doesn't know anything about love or kindness or the joy of helping others...she isn't very happy. Or so Fauna would have you believe. Wink

And yes, to go back to the original post "Skumps" is just a made-up toast word that Kings Stefan and Hubert invented for themselves.

I think she knows about love, but sees it as weak emotion. Heck, she torments Phillip with the image of his release in a hundred years and mocks him with the information of the "peasant girl" (or whatever term she used) was the princess he was trying to avoid. I believe she ends with a mocking "true love conquers all" statement. It's stuff like that that makes her such a cool villain. That and calling on the powers of hell to turn into a dragon, that's cool too.

So, in this case, yeah, she's evil.

I love the part when she starts mocking him and gets all sarcastic about fairly tales. Laughing

I find it funny for two reasons. One, it seemed like Disney was poking fun at itself. Two, because Maleficent seemed to understand the way fairy tales worked. Surely, she must have understood that she was the villain that was soon to meet her doom? Laughing

I agree with you, I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to quote Fauna. The good fairies keep me in hysterical laughter every time I watch that movie. Smile

Her entire speech to Prince Phillip is great; she is such a commanding presence and has such strong delivery. She is fantastic!

Does anyone else but me think that Aurora's mother was more beautiful than Aurora? Maybe her mom got better fairy gifts when she was a kid. Laughing

LOL; I think they look quite alike. It sure bodes well for Aurora when she gets older, though!
