See, Aladdin and Jasmine would do it because they have a flying carpet, but people really DIDN'T travel for fun a lot back then. Travel was very difficult and people generally only traveled if they were merchants or, occasionally, religious pilgrims. Even kings would typically "vacation" by going to a pleasure palace or hunting ground that was only a small distance away from the city.
Of course, this is Aladdin, and only has to be as much like the historical Middle East as you want it to be. I prefer my Agrabah more realistic (to the point where I've actually picked a location for it and had people there deal with cities like Cairo and Baghdad instead of the series locations*) but if you want to just use magic and series locations go for it.
*okay, that was mainly because if you're writing an Aladdin/The Mummy crossover, Agrabah and Cairo have to exist in the same universe. |
